Well, that wave passed. And another one is rising.
From Aldi to Whole Foods — from Arcola to Twinbrook — a new set of grocery stores is arriving en masse, or scheduled to over the coming years. There are giants, size-wise, and also Giants. There are specialty and smaller-format stores. There are discount markets and ethnic grocers and development anchors.
Wegmans started in the ‘burbs and and is now moving toward the core. Shoppers is shutting down, and new arrivals are stepping in to fill the void. Due to the changing nature of the grocery business, some of the stores opening will serve as so much more: restaurants, food halls, distribution centers for local delivery of online orders, or your neighborhood watering hole or lunch spot.
